Waiting on Wednesday (4)

backwardsBACKWARDS by Todd Mitchell

Release Date: October 8, 2013
(Goodreads) (Amazon)

At the moment Dan’s life ends, the Rider’s begins. Unwillingly tied to Dan, who seems to be shuffling through life, the Rider finds himself moving backwards in time, each day revealing more of the series of events that led to Dan’s suicide. As the Rider struggles to figure out what he’s meant to do, he revels in the life Dan ignores. Beyond the simple pleasures of a hot shower and the sun on his face, the Rider also notices the people around Dan: his little sister, always disappointed by her big brother’s rejection, and his overwhelmed mom, who can never rely on Dan for help. Most of all, the Rider notices Cat with her purple hair, artistic talent, and misfit beauty. But Cat doesn’t want anything to do with Dan, paying attention instead to popular football player Finn. As the days move in reverse and Halloween looms, Cat becomes the center of the Rider’s world — until the Rider finds out the shocking reason why Cat is so angry with Dan. Can the Rider make things right before it’s too late?

twdTHE WAKING DARK by Robin Wasserman

Release Date: September 10, 2013
(Goodreads) (Amazon)

They called it the killing day. Twelve people dead, all in the space of a few hours. Five murderers: neighbors, relatives, friends. All of them so normal. All of them seemingly harmless. All of them now dead by their own hand . . . except one. And that one has no answers to offer the shattered town. She doesn’t even know why she killed—or whether she’ll do it again.

Something is waking in the sleepy town of Oleander’s, Kansas—something dark and hungry that lives in the flat earth and the open sky, in the vengeful hearts of upstanding citizens. As the town begins its descent into blood and madness, five survivors of the killing day are the only ones who can stop Oleander from destroying itself. Jule, the outsider at war with the world; West, the golden boy at war with himself; Daniel, desperate for a different life; Cass, who’s not sure she deserves a life at all; and Ellie, who believes in sacrifice, fate, and in evil. Ellie, who always goes too far. They have nothing in common. They have nothing left to lose. And they have no way out. Which means they have no choice but to stand and fight, to face the darkness in their town—and in themselves.

Red rose growing through soil against spooky treeALMOST DEAD by Rebecca A. Rogers

Release Date: September 15, 2013

Seventeen-year-old Flora Mackey is not exactly thrilled to wake up from a car accident and find out she’s a ghost. Making this lifelike hell even worse is being trapped with her arch enemy and collision partner, Laney Tipps. The two normally couldn’t get along if their lives depended on it, but now they have no choice.

After recovering from the initial shock of seeing their lifeless bodies—and that they can’t escape each other—Flora and Laney have to find a way out of the twisted, gray realm. But they quickly learn that the farther they stray from their motionless corpses, the weaker they become. Luckily Sara, a spirit guide, shows up to help. Sara informs them they’ll have to wait for someone in their city to die so they can take their place in the land of the living.

What’s scarier than waiting in purgatory? Time. If Flora and Laney don’t return to the physical world and leave clues for their families that they’re still alive, they’ll never be found. Which sucks, because once their bodies give out, their souls will be permanently stuck in the afterlife.

btdatdbsBETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA by April Genevieve Tucholke

Release Date: August 15, 2013
(Goodreads) (Amazon)

Nothing much exciting rolls through Violet White’s sleepy, seaside town…until River West comes along. River rents the guesthouse behind Violet’s crumbling estate, and as eerie, grim things start to happen, Violet begins to wonder about the boy living in her backyard. Is River just a crooked-smiling liar with pretty eyes and a mysterious past? Or could he be something more? Violet’s grandmother always warned her about the Devil, but she never said he could be a dark-haired boy who takes naps in the sun, who likes coffee, who kisses you in a cemetery…who makes you want to kiss back. Violet’s already so knee-deep in love, she can’t see straight. And that’s just how River likes it.

This has Gothic romance written all over it. I know the release date is coming up fast (yay!), but I couldn’t help but add this one to my list.

THE DREAM THIEVES (The Raven Cycle, #2) by Maggie Stiefvater

Release Date: September 17, 2013
(Goodreads) (Amazon) (Fountain Bookstore)

Now that the ley lines around Cabeswater have been woken, nothing for Ronan, Gansey, Blue, and Adam will be the same. Ronan, for one, is falling more and more deeply into his dreams, and his dreams are intruding more and more into waking life. Meanwhile, some very sinister people are looking for some of the same pieces of the Cabeswater puzzle that Gansey is after…

I got hooked on Stiefvater’s novels when a friend told me how she had bawled herself to sleep after reading a book called Shiver. Anyone that knows me, knows I love a good emotional book. But one about a boy who turns into a wolf every winter? …eh. At this point I was all Twilight‘ed out and another supernatural love story about werewolves wasn’t a high priority. But after reading the first chapter online, I decided I liked the way Maggie wrote and gave it a shot. Boy did I fall hard for that book. Three novels later, Stiefvater released The Raven Boys. Again, I wasn’t sure about the subject of the book (ancient Scottish kings, witches — although I do love a good witchy novel — rich boys who speak Latin, and a girl named Blue) but I gave it a shot. Maggie’s writing has a way of hooking you in and then taking you on a wonderful ride and it only gets better with each novel. Look for it this fall.

hoiasHOUSE OF IVY & SORROW by Natalie Whipple

Release Date: April 15, 2014
(Goodreads) (Amazon)

Josephine Hemlock has spent the last 10 years hiding from the Curse that killed her mother. But when a mysterious man arrives at her ivy-covered, magic-fortified home, it’s clear her mother’s killer has finally come to destroy the rest of the Hemlock bloodline. Before Jo can even think about fighting back, she must figure out who she’s fighting in the first place. The more truth Jo uncovers, the deeper she falls into witchcraft darker than she ever imagined. Trapped and running out of time, she begins to wonder if the very Curse that killed her mother is the only way to save everyone she loves.

Speaking of witchy novels…this next one is actually being compared between Maggie and the TV show Charmed. I’m really curious to find out what, exactly, this book is about. How can the Curse save everyone if it killed everyone she loved in the first place? I stumbled upon this when I was looking for upcoming releases. This is so far in advance that I’m almost afraid I ‘ll forget about it by the time it’s released (and totally bummed I can’t buy it now)!
