They say to never judge a book by its cover. But I say, why not? To start things off, I’m going to look at Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke & Bone.
This was the cover I was first introduced to. Personally, I think it makes it look like a lot of other (mediocre) YA novels and sadly it’s what put me off from reading this for so long. To me, the font looks like someone made a graphic in Photoshop and used a font you’d find for free on a website. I do like the burst of color surrounded by all the black and white — which also makes me think of Karou’s hair.
And then….I saw this one. I absolutely fell in love with this cover. I also think it fits the book better because if I remember correctly, there was a passage in the book about wings/feathers like this. The font on this one fits perfectly with the feathers. It still has a bit of the cursive writing like the US cover, but it’s more elegant. The color of the feathers makes it look like raven feathers, the way they change color under a light.
Is there a book you’d like me to compare covers with? Let me know in the comments!
